1911 Barrel Fitting Fixture

$25.00

Designed by master gunsmith Randy Lee, the Apex Barrel Fitting Fixture is what you need on your workbench when it’s time to fit a 1911 barrel. This fixture holds 1911 barrels in the correct position to precisely file the barrel hood (length and width) for proper fitting to your slide.
The Apex 1911

SKU: APX-A-104-142-C Category:

Designed by master gunsmith Randy Lee, the 1911 Barrel Fitting Fixture solves the precision problem of hood-to-slide fitment during barrel installation. Without a dedicated holding fixture, the barrel rocks or shifts under file pressure, leading to inconsistent material removal, uneven hood shoulders, or excessive clearance that degrades lockup. This fixture indexes the barrel in the correct vertical and horizontal orientation, allowing the armorer to file hood length and width with repeatable accuracy. Available in aluminum or 3D polymer; the 3D polymer variant provides superior grip and reduced marring compared to metal versions.

Platform Compatibility

  • 1911 Government (5″)
  • 1911 Commander (4.25″)
  • 1911 Officer/Defender (3.5″)
  • Bull barrels (full-diameter profile)
  • Standard bushing-style barrels

Key Features

  • Underside machined with flat reference surfaces for secure vise clamping
  • Retains barrel at correct filing angle for hood length and width adjustments
  • 3D polymer version offers non-marring contact surfaces and better vibration damping
  • Aluminum version provides rigid, heat-sink body for extended work sessions
  • Compact footprint – fits standard bench vises without special adapters
  • Works with both ramped and non-ramped barrel configurations

Install Difficulty

Tool setup: 1/5 (clamp in vise, insert barrel, tighten). Barrel fitting skill level: 4/5 – requires knowledge of hood clearance specs, file technique, and barrel-to-slide lockup measurement. Tools needed: bench vise, flat file (6″ or 8″), 600-grit sandpaper, calipers, slide assembly for test-fitting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 3D polymer version less durable than aluminum?

No. The 3D polymer variant is generally better than the aluminum tool. It provides superior grip on the barrel, resists marring the finish, and dampens vibration during filing. The polymer structure is reinforced for repeated clamping cycles and will not deform under normal bench vise pressure.

Will this fixture work with a bull barrel that lacks a bushing step?

Yes. The fixture accommodates full-diameter bull barrels. The clamping surfaces contact the barrel body directly, and the underside vise flats remain accessible regardless of barrel profile. No bushing step or barrel link is required for retention.

Can I use this fixture for initial barrel hood roughing, or only final fitting?

Both. The fixture provides stable indexing for aggressive file strokes during roughing as well as light passes for final fit. For roughing, use the aluminum version if you prefer a rigid, non-compliant platform. For final fitting and finish work, the 3D polymer version reduces the risk of chatter marks on the hood surfaces.

Ships same business day when ordered by 2 PM ET. All Apex armorer tools carry a limited lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects. Fixture only – barrel and slide sold separately.
